The service

Last updated : July 2026

This part describes what a Kift is, its two modes, its lifecycle, its validation and its durations.

1. What is a Kift

A Kift is a prepaid recommendation: an amount locked onto a specific experience - a given service or product, at a business - that you appreciate and recommend to a loved one, who enjoys it whenever they wish. It covers all or part of the price of that experience. If it is not used, it is refunded to the person who gave it.

  • A recommendation, not an obligation: the recipient is free to accept the Kift or not. If they do not claim it within the allotted time, or decline it, the Kifter is refunded. The Kifter may also cancel a Kift that has not yet been claimed.
  • A Kift is not a free balance, a wallet, a multi-purpose gift card or electronic money: it can only be used for the locked experience, at the intended business.
  • KiftMe is a technical intermediary. Payments are operated by Stripe, a payment provider, and KiftMe does not store your bank details.
  • The “Kifter” is the person who creates and funds a Kift; the “recipient” is the person who receives and uses it.

2. The two modes (Single Mode and self-service)

Depending on whether the business is a KiftMe partner or not, a Kift follows one of the two modes below.

Single Mode - partner business

The business has a KiftMe account and collects payment via Stripe. The experience comes from its own catalogue (service, product, price). The business is a party to the relationship: it undertakes to honour the Kift and receives payment after confirmed consumption.

Self-service - non-partner business

The business is not a partner. It is the Kifter who describes the experience (business, service, amount): this is a declaration. The business named in this way is not a party to these Terms, consents to nothing and receives no payment from KiftMe. Use of the Kift is established by means of a supporting document (receipt) provided by the recipient.

Declarative nature (self-service): the service and amount you declare frame your intention but never amount to proof of use. The proof remains the receipt provided by the recipient after consumption. By choosing self-service, you accept this declarative model as well as the automated validation method described in §4 and its limits.

3. Lifecycle of a Kift

A Kift follows these steps:

  • Creation: the Kifter selects or describes the experience and, where applicable, attaches a reference document.
  • Payment: the Kifter pays the amount via Stripe; the Kift is then created.
  • Delivery: the Kift is shared with the recipient or sent to them directly.
  • Consumption: the recipient goes to the business, enjoys the experience and pays, if needed, the top-up (the part not covered by the Kift) directly via KiftMe.
  • Validation: the recipient uploads their receipt; KiftMe checks its consistency (see §4).
  • Outcome: if validation succeeds, the recipient is credited (self-service) or the business is paid (Single Mode); otherwise, the Kifter is refunded.
  • Expiry: a Kift not used within its validity period is refunded to the Kifter.

Payment, top-up and refund conditions are detailed in the “Pricing and payments” and “Refunds” parts.

4. Validation by receipt and artificial intelligence

Use of a Kift is established by means of a receipt or supporting document, the validation of which is automated. By using the service, you accept this validation method and acknowledge the limits described below.

  • Who uploads: it is always the recipient, logged into their account, who uploads the consumption receipt and triggers validation. Any document provided by the Kifter serves as a reference and never constitutes proof of consumption.
  • Automated decision (Article 22 GDPR): validation is made automatically by a document-analysis system assisted by artificial intelligence, framed by deterministic rules.
  • Scope of the check: KiftMe verifies that a document appears to prove a payment, purchase, booking or paid access consistent with the Kift. KiftMe does not certify the recipient’s physical presence, the actual use of the service, their satisfaction, or any official validation by the business.
  • Not infallible: automated checks are not infallible. KiftMe reserves the right to carry out after-the-fact checks and to reverse a validation. Fraud remains prohibited and punishable even if it was not detected immediately (see “Fraud and sanctions”).
  • Human intervention and challenge: in case of doubt, the decision may be submitted to a human review - the person who gave the Kift, or the KiftMe team for at-risk cases. If a decision is a refusal, you can challenge it to obtain a re-examination. You can at any time request human intervention and express your point of view.

5. Deadlines and durations

  • Kift validity: a Kift is valid for 12 months from its creation. After this period without use, it is refunded to the Kifter.
  • Availability: the recipient has 30 days from creation to claim the Kift; failing that, the Kift is refunded to the Kifter.
  • Validation: after the receipt is uploaded, validation occurs within a reasonable time; in case of human review, the applicable timeframes are indicated to you in the app.
  • Attempts: the number of receipt-upload attempts is limited; beyond that, the case is routed to a review.

The retention periods for your personal data are set out in the Privacy Policy (separate document).

6. The Mystery Kift

The Mystery Kift is a collective, playful format. An organiser creates an event made up of several groups; each person joins a group and prepays a small Kift. These Kifts are then matched anonymously between participants from different groups. You are both a Kifter (you fund a Kift) and a recipient (you receive someone else’s Kift).

How it works

  • Creation: an organiser creates the event, defines the groups and opens registrations.
  • Participation: you join a group and prepay a Kift of a small amount (between €2 and €10). One participant corresponds to a single Kift of a single amount: it is not a shared pot.
  • Matching: once registrations close, participants from different groups are matched in pairs. The recipient of your Kift is determined automatically, without any choice or intervention from you or the organiser - this is the “mystery” aspect.
  • Reveal: the identity of the two matched people is disclosed only once each has consumed the Kift they received. A discussion space, with a shared photo album, then opens between them.

Refunds and removals

  • Before matching: if the event ends without your Kift being matched, or if you withdraw your participation, or if the organiser removes it, your Kift is refunded in full.
  • After matching: once matched, your Kift is intended for another person. If the organiser then removes your participation (for example on moderation grounds), you are excluded from the event, but the already-matched Kift is not refunded: it remains usable by its recipient.
  • Matched Kift not consumed: a matched Kift that is not consumed within the period indicated in the app is refunded to the person who funded it.

The other rules of a Kift (receipt validation, top-up, expiry, fraud) also apply to the Mystery Kift. The organiser does not choose the pairings and does not access participants’ identities beyond what the app shows them.

7. The Multiple Kift

The Multiple Kift lets you give, in one go, a Kift to several recipients. Each recipient receives their own Kift, independent of the others, with its own lifecycle (claim, consumption, expiry, refund).

How it works

  • Creation and payment: the Kifter creates a Multiple Kift for several recipients and makes a single payment that funds all the Kifts.
  • Independence: each recipient has a separate Kift. What one does (claim, consume, let expire) has no effect on the others’ Kifts.
  • Discussion: after a recipient consumes their Kift, a private discussion space opens between them and the Kifter. Each conversation is individual (one thread per recipient); there is no shared album.

Refunds

  • Kift not consumed: if a recipient does not consume their Kift within its validity period, the corresponding share is refunded to the Kifter, independently of the other recipients.
  • Refusal or cancellation: if a recipient declines their Kift, or if the Kifter cancels the Multiple Kift, the shares concerned are refunded to the Kifter.
  • Partial consumption: if a Kift is only partly consumed, only the unconsumed share is refunded to the person who funded it, in accordance with the general refund rules.

Each Kift within a Multiple Kift otherwise follows the general rules set out in these terms (validation, top-up, expiry, fraud).

8. On-site consumption (Single Mode)

At a partner business (Single Mode), your Kift is consumed on site, using the KiftMe point of sale (the business’s terminal, contactless or QR payment).

How it works

  • On site: you present your Kift to the business; consumption is confirmed directly on the KiftMe terminal.
  • Top-up: if the value of your Kift does not cover the full price, you pay the difference (the top-up) via KiftMe, on site and never outside the platform (see “Pricing and payments”).
  • Recording: once consumption is confirmed, the Kift is marked as consumed and the business is paid according to the payout rules (see “Pricing and payments”).
  • In the event of an issue on site (for example if the terminal screen does not immediately show the confirmation), the record made by KiftMe prevails: you cannot be charged twice for the same consumption.

The point of sale is a tool used by the business. Its rules of use (authorised devices, terminal geolocation, employer responsibility) are set out in the “Businesses” part and in the “Point of sale” Privacy Policy. Consumption in self-service instead follows the receipt validation described in §4.
